Solid wood vs engineered wood flooring

Our wood flooring range comes in two types: solid wood and engineered wood.

These flooring options look nearly identical, and both require an expansion gap when installed. However, they also have several key differences.

Solid hardwood flooring

Solid wood flooring uses planks from a single wood species, placed together to create a sophisticated design. While alternatives such as LVT flooring and laminate floors provide a similar look, many people prefer the look and feel of authentic wood.

Modern solid wood planks often use a smart tongue-and-groove system for easier installation. They can be sanded down and refinished multiple times to restore vibrancy and extend their lifespan. With proper care and maintenance, these floor types can last generations.

Engineered wood flooring

Engineered wood flooring is sought after for its high-quality composite construction and durability. Engineered wood floors are often made from several different types of wood, with the topmost layer usually made from a single tree species. This gives it a near-identical look to solid hardwood flooring.

The floating floor installation method can be applied with this material, making it suitable for underfloor heating. Additionally, it’s less prone to expansion and warping in damp and cold conditions, especially when combined with a damp-proof membrane.

Compared to laminate flooring, engineered wood offers a more natural-looking finish. Engineered wood floors can be sanded and refinished a few times due to the multiple layers of wood used in their construction.
