What is wood laminate?

Wood laminate flooring is constructed from several printed wood-effect layers pressed together around an HDF (high-density fibre) core.

It is similar to engineered wood flooring in a lot of ways, which is made from several layers of wood and covered with a solid wood veneer. The major difference, however, is that the topmost layer of laminate is simply the printed image of timber rather than the real thing.

Many people aren’t bothered by this, as many laminate wood floors are remarkably realistic, with all the grooves and notches you would expect from real wood. Laminate flooring allows more people than ever before to enjoy the joys of living in a home decked out in stunning wood flooring, whatever their budget may be.

Why choose laminate over wood?

Laminate flooring is easier to clean and maintain, one of the most durable flooring options on the market, and comes in at a much lower price point than hardwood.

Laminate comes with a wearing surface on top of the printed outer layer that adds an additional layer of protection and almost eliminates the risk of a dent, scratch, or stain.

There once was a time when laminate was a poor imitation of wood and was considered a cheap and cheerful alternative, but no longer. These days, good-quality laminate flooring can easily be mistaken for the real thing at a distance, and only upon close inspection would an expert eye be able to distinguish between the two.

Whilst neither laminate nor real wood makes for completely waterproof flooring, laminate is extremely stain-resistant and sometimes water-resistant, making it easier to clean. Though you don’t get waterproof laminate flooring, it can perform better in humid conditions. Water-resistant laminate flooring can be suitable for bathrooms and kitchens, too, often featuring good anti-slip ratings.

Your new floor can also be installed over an underfloor heating system in a room without worrying about the shrinkage or cracking that can sometimes occur with a real wood floor.

Why choose wood over laminate flooring?

Despite all of the wonderful benefits of a laminate wood floor, many people simply can’t get past the fact that it just isn’t quite the same as having the real thing.

If you do have a little extra room in your budget, there certainly are some advantages to upgrading from laminate flooring and fitting to engineered wood or even real wood flooring,

Appearance is one, with the authenticity of real wood planks being impossible to replicate with 100% accuracy, and poor laminate flooring for sale from the wrong laminate flooring installer can look tacky and out of place.

Luxury laminate flooring is hard to damage, but not impossible, and once damage is done, it is hard to repair the board. Real wood, on the other hand, can be sanded down and refinished many times, although ongoing maintenance is required to keep it looking fantastic.

This also means that laminate flooring has a shorter lifespan than wood flooring, which can perform well and look great decade after decade if you maintain and clean it properly. Still, high-quality laminate flooring will last for 15–25 years on average, and the much lower laminate floor fitting costs mean that this is not too much of a concern.

Can you provide rough prices from a builder's floor plan or an estate agent's schedule?

Yes, send your plan or bring it into the showroom, and we will be able to calculate a working price based on the floor plan.

How quickly can a survey be carried out?

We always try to get out to you as quickly as possible and aim to measure within a week of your visit. If you’re local, we can normally arrange to measure within a couple of days.

My subfloor is in poor condition. Can you fix it?

Yes, each floor covering requires a different standard of floor preparation. As long as the subfloor is structurally “sound”, our laminate flooring fitters can generally deal with most issues.

A good carpet and underlay can sometimes make up for a certain level of unevenness, but moisture-resistant laminate flooring needs the subfloor to be smoother because it’s less “forgiving”. For example, our laminate flooring fitters can fit plywood to floorboards and screed concrete floors to bring them up to standard and we can usually advise what’s required when we come to measure.

Can you source a product that I have seen elsewhere?

Possibly. No one has a showroom big enough to display every single option that is “out there”. We can usually get hold of most other types and ranges of flooring and carpets, so let us know the name, colour, and where you’ve seen it, and we’ll probably be able to find it.

I wish to place an order, but I'm not ready yet for the installation.

No problem! We can store your laminate flooring supplies in our warehouse. Many customers want to take advantage of a special offer even though they haven’t moved into a property or are waiting for decorating to be carried out. Or they just want to order good home laminate flooring and delay the installation for whatever reason. This is absolutely fine, simply place your order with our laminate flooring company to avoid any possible price increases, and we will set aside your flooring until you are ready for fitting — at no extra charge.

Do you carry our commercial / contract work?

Do you charge for carrying out a survey?

No! As one of the most popular laminate flooring suppliers and fitters, we offer a free home estimate and planning service, available 5 days a week at a time to suit our customers. In addition, we can bring samples of the laminate flooring brands to your home.

How long does it take to get my flooring and/ or carpets fitted after I have placed an order?

It depends on what you choose and how complex or easy the job is. If you need a quick turnaround, we can show you products with a fast delivery or something from our stock.

Can I borrow samples?

Yes, you can borrow any samples you see in our showroom before you buy laminate flooring, and we can collect them when we come to measure. That allows you to see them over a period of time in your own home and also how the colours look in your own lighting conditions.

Can you help with removing my existing floor coverings and moving my furniture?

Yes, for an additional charge, we can move a (pre-agreed) reasonable amount of heavy furniture and old flooring. You’ll have to remove electrical equipment, any breakable items, smaller pieces and ornaments or books from the room yourself. Speak to us and we can advise what we can do. Also, for an additional charge our laminate floor company can uplift and remove the old floor covering on the day of installation.

I've purchased carpet/flooring elsewhere - can you install it for me?

We’re happy to supply and fit, but if you’ve purchased flooring from other laminate flooring stores, we can’t install it, unfortunately. If you’ve seen flooring elsewhere, send us an email with a link and we can source it more often than not.

Allfloors will be closed for the local Bank Holiday on Friday 27th September, and will re-open at 9am on Tuesday 1st October.
